For me the most compelling evidence for a relatively early date for 1
Thessalonians is 1 Thess. 4:13-18. (By relatively early I mean after enough
time has elapsed for the writing of 2 Thessalonians but earlier than 1
Corinthians.) The work of Bob Funk, John White, et al., on epistolary
conventions establishes the probability that OU GAR THELOMEN DE HUMAS
AGNOEN, ADELPHOI, PERI . . . is not only a disclosure formula but one which
introduces material not previously known to the readers/hearers. This is
thus probably the first time that Paul talks with the Thessalonians about
believers who have died before the Day. How long did it take before the
first Christian died in this congregation or in one known to them? This
looks like early stuff. Gert Luedemann picked this up in his Paul, Apostle
to the Gentiles: Studies in Chronology, chapter 5, "The Eschatological
Statements i 1 Thess. 4:13--18 and 1 Cor. 15:51-52 as Confirmation of Paul's
Early Macedonian Mission."
