Dear Jeff,
I believe that your criticism is essentially correct when you state
that 2 Cor 6:14 does not have to discuss sexual ethics. But it could
discuss sexual ethics (e.g., 1 Cor 7:39). Richard adds that it concerns
"the relationship between the believing and non-believing world," an
assertion which all accept. The teacher image used in Matt 11:29 does not
have to apply here because the situation is slightly different. The teacher
and disciple relationship may be analogous to the farmer and ox. The
disciple is working by learning and the teacher is directing. In Matt 11:29
Jesus seems to own the yoke: "my yoke."
But Paul in 2 Cor 7:14 is alluding to two different kinds of animal
which are under the same yoke, trying to work together as a team. The image
goes back to the law in Deut 22:10 where God commands the Israelites not to
plough with a donkey and an ass together. The two animals, unequal in size
and movement, should not be a team. So believers should not try to work
together with unbelievers in close partnerships where relationship to God
would be a relevant factor. This prohibition would include a relationship
of false teacher and disciple, however, since they are working together.

Yours,
Harold Holmyard
