Laptop with Xfbdev X server, desktop with Xvesa, both plugged into a wired router. Activated on network cards (pcmcia start in the laptop, insmod pci driver in the desktop). They ping each other and the router.

dhcp assigns the laptop 192.168.0.2
desktop 192.168.0.3
(or ifconfig manually would also work)

On laptop, go into X with Xfbdev, icewm, rxvt.
xhost +192.168.0.3

On desktop, console
export DISPLAY=192.168.0.2:0
rxvt

The rxvt appears on the laptop (which is running framebuffer X, which I could not get to work like this over dialup internet).

It also works in the other direction, and between consoles on one computer.

I can run programs on the desktop, even play music on it via commands from the laptop (load sound drivers, mplayer). I CANNOT ping websites online on the laptop after dialing with the desktop because the DNS server is changed even though resolv.conf looks okay. If I exit X on the desktop and remove the network driver I can dial and get online.

There are ways to share a modem connection without X (see archives - via serial port or ethernet cable).

I don't know what is different at the library. Probably I just goofed.
Does anyone with a home broadband connection have this working?
