Opera on a 100MHz laptop with 24MB memory and 48MB swap space.

bz2 binary %RAM (of 72MB)
7.54 4.6M 9.8M 57.4% (with graphical ad banner, not removable)
8.54 5.5M 12M 39.7% (about:blank default page)
9.26 6.5M 14.4M 57.9% (loaded about:blank instead of speed dial)
9.50b 7.6M (this one crashes a lot, unstable beta)
9.63 10.2M 15.9M 69.9% (about:blank)

top reveals several copies of Opera 9.63 running, each 69.9% of total
memory (about 50MB), showing about:blank.

When I run Opera 9.63 (installed rather than from the directory it
unpackaged to) on my 1.4GHz with 512MB memory, top does not show 'opera'
but does list several processes called '3', taking up 2.3 to 3.3% of my
512MB (11-16MB).

Opera 9.26 and 9.50 are 'opera', but 9.63 is '3' for top.

9.63 uses 23.9% of 72MB on my desktop (boot with mem=72M) = 17MB

It uses 59.7% of 24MB =14MB (and a bit of the 48MB swap file)
Top apparently lists amount of actual not virtual memory used.
Free gave me total amount of both used, but not by process - is there a way to see how much virtual memory a process is using?

On the 100MHz laptop Opera 9.63 uses 69.9% of the 24MB when I am not online.

The difference may be related to what else is using actual memory.
On the desktop I am also online via modem and ssh.

8.54 uses far less memory and is more suitable for older laptops with little memory.

I tried again to compile elinks with ecmascript (javascript) since it uses
less memory. The compiler could not find js*.h, which I put in the directory I was instructed to, and I patched as instructed. Steven, could you please compile elinks with javascript? The javascript is downloaded from Mozilla and is probably more complete than what links2 uses. The most recent version would not compile for me even without javascript. I compiled 0.11.4rc1 from Mar 28 2008 without js.

Since it is nongraphical, it is using 8.7% of 24MB (and no memory for Xvesa or rxvt or xinit).

Is there any precompiled binary with js support for 2.4 kernel and glibc 2.2.5 or earlier?

Elinks unfortunately needs kernel 2.4 to work. The total memory used would still be far less.

Elinks without js is 16MB but upx shrinks it to 6.5MB.

You probably don't want to use upx on a slow computer.

Opera 9.63 is 16MB and 6.4MB. It has far more dependencies including X.
