It runs everything in /etc/inittab. Usually, this means rc(s),
getty and unmount (during shutdown). It should start anything
you need to use applications (e.g. X, lpd, crond, syslogd,
although it is highly debatable whether you need any of this.).

You can chroot to Ubuntu and run login there if it has it (it should!)

2.6 is very unstable, due to the Bitkeeper fiasco and various
other issues which slowed down development.

It should install right over it. The only time I ever installed
98SE, it was to a blank drive. Are you running the 98SE setup
from within 98FE (i.e. insert disk while 98FE is running and
run d:setup)
