Try using:

mplayer -ao oss (other options, including source)

This time I got:

audio_setup: Can't make filedescriptor blocking: Function not implemented.
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.

Ugh. Are permissions correct? If they are, it is likely a buggy OSS driver.
That could need a kernel upgrade.

If you just want MPlayer to decode things for you, you can use

mplayer -ao pcm

which will dump the output to audiodump.wav which sox should be able
to play.

This does let me play an mp3 with play, filtered through mplayer, but I could just play it directly with mpg123. Could I set up a script that would run an mp3 file through mplayer and then to play?
mplayer -ao pcm - http:/......mp3| play -

I tried this with a radio URL and was told:
sox: Type AUTO input must be a file, not a pipe.

I could try writing a script to produce audiodump.wav and pipe that to play but this seems unnecessarily complex, considering Ron got it to work directly.

It also could not find an mplayer input.config file - could I have
put the oss option in there instead of using a switch?
/root/.mplayer/input.conf or /usr/local/etc/mplayer/input.conf

OSS isn't an input driver. In any case, you do not need any
configuration files for MPlayer to work correctly.

I was able to put ao oss in the empty config file you supplied and omit the -ao oss, and it still of course did not play.
