Sorry, the BL2 kernel does not support USB. Nor do any of the
kernels in Slackware 7.1. USB is a relatively new addition to
Linux. It came in with Slackware 8.0 (kernel 2.2.19). I suggest
you replace the BL2 (zimage) with the bare.i kernel (bzimage)
from Slackware 8.0. You will also need to get new modules from
Slackware 8.0 and put them in /lib/modules/2.2.19/misc

Later Slackwares (8.1, 9.0) also do USB and could probably be
used, but they have 2.4 kernels. I suspect the 2.2.19 kernel
will be a cleaner replacement for the BL2 kernel (2.2.16).
