  • Subject: [BL] Opera works in 16M RAM
  • Date: Sat, 31 May 2003 16:55:58 -0400 (EDT)

I added mem=16M to the boot.bat file for BL2 which makes Linux run in 16M
even though the computer has 32M.

I logged into VC1 and VC2 as root.

I typed 'free' to see memory usage. I think 'used' also includes cache,
which means once you run a program it remains in memory until there is no
enough memory left to cache it.

Total memory 14716

With only two agetty's running and 'free':
used 3704 free 11012 hared 2808 buffer 176
I did this a couple more times and got different numbers:

3380 11336 2804 164

I loaded Links 2.1.9 in svgalib graphics mode and got

7308 7408 3552 208

or
6668 8048 3552 192
or
6836 7880 3552 192

I rebooted to empty the cache and loaded xmono, ratpoison, one xterm,
and opera and got:

14276 440 (free) 6084 324
or
14308 408 7724 468

I have a swap partition that was not used at all.

I ran opera in xmono and discovered it does not display images.
I loaded xvg16 and ran opera again.

When accessing llbean or landsend there was occasional brief access to the
hard drive. I waited for these sites to load and then did free.

landsend without images : used 14316 - swap 0
with images 14416 used
llbean with images 14400 used

The computer may have been accessing the swap space while loading these
images, or it may have been accessing the opera binary.

I have not tried loading two webpages at once. I would not do this on a
computer with 16M RAM. I probably also would not use Opera at the same
time as lynx but I will try that anyway. Used alone, it seems to run as
fast with 16M as with 32M RAM.

I am telnetting while also running Opera and telnet is going normal speed.

Are there other tests I should perform? I have not tried tops.
I am not using icewm so don't have a cpu indicator.
