The way I passed my exam in modern Hebrew was to read as much as I could
from the Encyclopedia Miqrait (sp?). The Hebrew there is not too
difficult, but it was sufficiently interesting (and there is *lots* of
it) to keep me going. There are some pieces that you can understand only
by having a knowledge of the specialty or knowing the writer. I read one
book for my dissertation and found that he had either invented or
transliterated from English back to Hebrew words that did not exist in any
dictionary. Very frustrating, especially when you are having trouble with
the dictionaries (they don't work like the BH dictionaries).
