In India we make GUR (sometimes called jaggery in English) by
drying sugarcane juice. Gur is consumed in very large quantities in North
India. It is said to be more healthful than sugar.
One of the uses is to have a small piece of gur after meal,
especially during winters. Tastes as good as a chocolate.
I am sure that you should be able to buy it at Indian grocery
stores in USA.
However, now they have started adding some chemicals to the
syrup to make GUR look less dark and more attractive. This is of course
not a good development.
