The point is not everybody knows how to use the "Military"
ones.
If I am with someone and their compass breaks they should be
able to use mine without instruction.
Thus you limit to "standard" compass.

just the a compass that you can navigate
with it using a topo maps, nothing it's complicated if you study the subject;
learn how to navigate with any compass and any map or you're in the wrong
business, the different between the best composes and the worse composes is
$30 , so it's up to you.....
it has a
magnetized dial instead of a plain needle. The dial is the one marked with
the directions while the face is marked with numbers used for determining
more precise directions. It has a lensatic card attached to it. This allows
users to read the compass without needing to glance down and look at the
compassÂ’ face directly. A protractor is necessary for it to be used with a
map.
The circumference of the compass face is divided into
6400 units. One unit is actually 1 meter of separation at a distance of
1,000 meters. One mil is also 1 yard at 1000 yards. This is the military (or
mil) system.
They are
more complex, and require special training above and beyond the normal
compass.

msar distro list Subject: [MSAR] compass
question
I was reading the New Mexico MSAR study guide and it states that
military or lensatic compasses are not acceptable for their gear list.
May I ask why? Does it have to do with how the compasses react with
the terrain there?
