You don't use a flashlight on the trail for several reasons.
Night adaptation is far superior for night operations.
Your horse has superb night vision, better than yours probably.
Use of a light causes you to focus only on the lit area.
There is a high probability of flash blinding (causing their pupils to
constrict and loose their night adaptation) your teammates.
By illuminating a limited area you cannot see anything beyond the light.
If your subject is evasive he will see you long before you see him.
You become a target for poachers.
Lights are heavy and either give you a headache or occupy hands.
Batteries always die at the wrong time.
Anybody got more reasons not to use a light?
