It has a lensatic card attached to it. This allows users to read the compass without needing to glance down and look at the compass’ face directly. A protractor is necessary for it to be used with a map. The circumference of the compass face is divided into 6400 units. One unit is actually 1 meter of separation at a distance of 1,000 meters. One mil is also 1 yard at 1000 yards. This is the military (or mil) system.
They are more complex, and require special training above and beyond the normal compass.
