OTOH,
Of course there's always an 'other hand'. Can't be completely accounted
for. But what I'm talking about is the odds. Foul accidents lurk
everywhere and at all times. The only thing that can be done to hedge one's
bet is overall general strength and conditioning. Strong people don't
injure as easily. Stressed bones and ligaments and tendons are less prone
to injury. But again, it's all just the odds.
Just to play the Devil's advocate here: if insurance costs $500 a month
(which is what I generally find), it only takes about two accident free
years (with interest) to have the $15K in the bank instead of the insurance.
Then if you have such an accident, you break even. If not, you are a good
bit ahead.
Also (have personal experience in this) when the hospital and surgeon
present their bill for $15K, you can say "I'm paying with cash, now what
kind of deal can I get?" There's a lot of fat and fluff in that $15K.
If one follows my way of thinking, the dice can roll against them and they'd
have been better off with insurance. But I still think the odds are on the
side of the person who invests in themselves and their health and not in the
insurance company.
