Thanks Elliotte for the feedback.
I've solved the issue using Xerces DOM L3 load/save, which seems to
successfully round trip attribute values, when pretty printing /
indenting.
Regarding the link you refer to:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#AVNormalize
Since the spec tells you how attribute whitespace is normalized could
one not, with care, write out attributes with formatting/indentation
such that the whitespace changes would be removed by the normalization
when the document is then read?
Leaving aside whether this SHOULD be done, would you agree that this
could be done?
