I'm going to leave this as a third party opportunity. It could easily be implemented in a third party library, and I don't want to clutter the core API with a lot of one-off options.
PS: why don't you get rid of the XHTML mime type?
it bugs me that I can't browse www.xom.nu with internet explorer.
text/html is the standard, man. At least provide an alternative version!
Hmm, the standard is RFC 3236 <http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc3236.txt> and it says use application/xhtml+xml
