Dirk,
I agree with you.
My suggestion is to:
1) Muddle with the source yourself, fix it the way you like. In doing so, you might consider using the XML format as the "serialized representation" of the XOM Document. With the ANT build.xml and the source, all things are possible.
2) Then, report your findings back to the group, if you even care at that point.
But in any case your posting seems to be more to the point than most in this this thread.
The point of open source is to have freedom to evolve as you need, outside of [design by committe or dictatorial] constraints.
