Announcing LOUVST {love.lust.lose.lost}, a
feature-length film by
Jonathan Blackwell.
"What is love?" "What constitutes a beneficial
relationship?"
Jonathan Blackwell has written, directed, and
designed a film
that aims to redefine how we approach emotional
commitment.
Typed and pronounced LOUVST, the actual word
Blackwell designed
in four letters. Beginning with "L", then what could
be either
an open "O" or a closed "U", followed by a blend of a
cursive
"S" and a "V", and ending with a mix of either lower
case "T" or
capital "E". The viewer is left to interpret, a la
Rorschach,
whether they read "love", "lust", "lose", or "lost".
Durham houses the storyline within its growing
community of local
arts and diversity. As the social fabric of downtown
is
strengthened by new development and commerce, the
communication
and trust of diverse individuals create numerous
positive
relationships, and forge progressive partnerships
financially,
emotionally, and spiritually into the 21st century.
Created, directed, and performed by Blackwell among a
cast with
dozens of contributing artists, Louvst highlights
settings with
local venues and performers, capturing the strengths
of our
regional cultural environment while exhibiting the
overlapping
lives of seven characters during a two-day period.
Originally
screened as a work in progress at the DADA (Durham
Association
for Downtown Arts) WARP Film Festival in 2004, Louvst
has since
transformed into a full-length feature, complete with
animation
to introduce each of its five chapters, and a complete
original
soundtrack.
The plot follows two couples and three single
characters as they
address relationship dynamics and give the audience
opportunities
to identify similar strengths and weaknesses of their
own. Sexual
orientations vary, but the truth of their emotion is
universal.
One couple (not allowed to marry) builds mutual
respect for a
positive future together; the other couple (allowed to
marry)
simply entertain themselves while communicating
towards a deeper
connection. The three other roles share the
perspective of any
single audience members, as they analyze their
self-perception.
Jonathan Blackwell began filming LOUVST after erecting
LINEAISM,
a three-year retrospective of his visual artwork at
Duke
University's Bryan Center in the Louise Jones Brown
Gallery. At
the time of this release, Blackwell has appeared on
the cover of
the "Triangle Live" supplement in the Herald Sun's
Friday,
November 11th coverage of the Durham Artwalk, 2005.
His first play UNREWIND, written, designed, and
directed his
senior year at Duke in 2001, presents rave culture
from the dance
floor to the stage and analyzes the pros and cons of
such a
utopian, albeit chemically augmented, social
phenomenon. LOUVST
is his second script and first film.
