Disclaimer: This is not intended to start flames (though I doubt it
would, these days). Please don't flame. Please just point me to
something helpful or give advice if you choose to respond.

I've been using mutt on the ils.unc.edu login box to write to y'all,
and I've been using Emacs as my editor. I set the $EDITOR environment
variable to do that. I also leave mutt up and running inside a screen
session so I can just log in and reattach.

A weird thing happened a couple of days ago--my $EDITOR switched to
vim, which I believe is the RHEL default?

Firstly, how could that have happened? Mutt never closed, much less
a terminated screen session.

Secondly, Emacs won't word-wrap anymore. What gives?

Any advice (other than "use Mozilla-Thunderbird instead") is welcome.

I'll even--*cringe*--welcome advice on how to get comfy with vim, but
I'd need to know what applies to vi and what to vim and what to nvi.

As an aside, would people be interested in a meeting that talked
some basic *nix sysadmin tools? The idea would be to have several
volunteers present briefly on a tool or toolkit and compile everything
into a wiki. We could add to TriLUG's wiki for now, but it'd also
be nice to have a UNC-based wiki (as has already been mentioned).
