Bruce Conner and the Primal Scene of Punk Rock
March 30 through June 24, 2012
Co-curated by Steven Wolf and Adam Lerner, this two-part exhibition
will debut a portfolio of punk
rock photos from 1977 of the punk scene at the Mabuhay Gardens in San
Francisco by legendary
artist Bruce Conner. The exhibition will be accompanied by videos of
punk rock and related
performance art from a variety of nationally acclaimed artists
critical to the era, an installation of
flyers from the Goteblud archive, and artworks by, among others, Sadie
Benning, Wallace
Berman, Juan Capistran, Tammy Rae Carland, Monte Cazzaza, Mary Ehrin,
Rodney Graham,
Miranda July, Martin Kersels, Tony Labat, Courtney Love, Kaz Oshiro
and Joe Rees. Spanning
historical and contemporary works, the presentation at MCA Denver
explores punk’s historical
connection to Conner and the Beats and examines punk’s ongoing
dialogue with contemporary
art. Driving a national dialogue on punk and art on the West Coast,
the exhibition coincided with
a panel at the College Art Association’s annual meeting in Los Angeles
in February 2012.
Steven Wolf is an independent curator, writer and gallerist based in
San Francisco. Adam Lerner
is the director and chief animator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.
