Fascinating. Of course, the roots go back far beyond Baroness Elsa and Marya Delvard. (and even Bram Stoker's 'New Woman'.)
 
Check out the dance events: Victims' Balls just post the French Revolution: the white make-up, red choker and lip stick to imitate those who hads been executed. Plus women as vampires, 1790s onwards. Also the merveilleuses as they were called: the rebellious and unconventional Frenchwomen who courted public disapproval.
