Scrawl, yes. Around '97 they signed to a major and released two discs,
TRAVEL ON, RIDER (one of their best albums, really-- check out the
piano-based song about a religious astronaut near the end; it's called
"STorey Musgrave") and then in 1999 or 2000 NATURE FILM (half new songs,
half re-recordings of old songs-- especially valuable because the old songs
are unavailable on CD; the new recordings aren't very different from the
old, except for a better studio, though I do prefer Carolyn's drums).
NATURE FILM got deleted almost as soon as it was released (shades of Tommy
Keene!), leaving Scrawl to tour in 2000 with no support: I saw them at the
Knitting Factory that year and it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen.
About 15 people showed up. The band used to maintain their own webpage at
www.scrawl.net, a site which now appears as a blank page; the last time I
checked it (a couple of months ago) they had played some reunion shows in
Ohio, but the drummer had moved to Scandinavia, and Marcy and Sue had
decided to put the band on hiatus until he returned. Too bad. Anyone know
if he's back? steve
