When you installed, part of the configuration of ethernet networking asks if
you want pcmcia-cs, when you reply no, then pcmcia-cs is dispelled. You
perhaps didn't say no, maybe didn't even set up your network connections or
you use pppoe or ppp (not ethernet) and those two don't ask then dispel
pcmcia-cs?
The short solution is dispel pcmcia-cs
