  • Date: Mon, 7 Apr 2003 16:25:08 -0400

This happens every few weeks on my SourceMage laptop. It doesn't happen on
the
other laptop.

Shortly before 11 this morning, I was browsing the Web and it stopped
working.
Blackcat could not access any external website, or anything else external
using TCP. It can access an external nameserver, and connections to neofelis
and littlecat are unaffected.. I had a meeting to go to so I went and left
the computer as it was, hoping it might fix itself.

When I got back, I still could not access the Web from blackcat. I tried
running tcpdump on blackcat, but the openssl upgrade made it not work, and
the version of tcpdump in the grimoire is not the one I have installed, so
casting it would require downloading the tarball, which as I said doesn't
work. So I ran it on neofelis, and told it to ignore anything going to or
from neofelis. The dump is below. I see an unusual amount of arping, but
whether that has anything to do with it I don't know.

I checked /var/log/messages on littlecat, thinking that maybe blackcat
misredhcped. It didn't. Nothing odd in /var/log/messages on blackcat either.
Nothing odd in route. The network fails for no apparent reason and the only
way to fix it appears to be to reboot.

I am somewhat new to sourcemage, but not necessarily to linux. Anyway, I
have sent the mail below to the scrollkeeper developers, and they are about
as stumped as I am.. I am wondering if there is a sourcemage-specific way to
clean this up. Incidentally, I am likewise having odd problems with some of
my other spells as well. Some of them are spells that I know I cast
successfully on the work machine I originally tested sourcemage out on, so I
know there must be some things I did wrong. I will make the further
admission that I know I have done several naughty things w/r/t spells which I
think I will not do again, such as ctrl-c on spells that seemed hung forever
and (after making sure none were running) deleting stuff in /tmp because
having unfinished cast scripts and lockfiles seemed to confuse spells.
Other oddities, besides what I see below, include the fact I had to use
export LIBIDLCONFIG=/usr/bin/libIDLconfig-2
ln -sf /usr/lib/libIDL-2.so /usr/lib/libIDL.so
in order to get the mozilla spell to see mu libIDL whereas at work I just
cast mozilla and it worked with no hacking..
I also have a problem in casting gedit. All the crazy dependencies it wanted
cast fine, but I get:
===
Spells are to be cast:

I find that whereas after other spells fail I have source untarred in
/usr/src, I do not seem to have anything relating to gedit. It seems to be
because the source never gets untarred where it belongs. Once I went to
/usr/src and did

root@perita:/usr/src# tar xzvf /var/spool/sorcery/gedit*

once I had thus untarred gedit in the proper place, it compiled fine when I
cast gedit
I will look into the spell to see if this is just something odd on my
machine, and if not I will try to submit a patch.

Anyway with respect to the scrollkeeper problem which is holding up my cast
of gnome-terminal I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas...

I have been asked by the scrollkeeper guys what versions of shells are
involved. The following is the state on my computer:

root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# bash --version
GNU bash, version 2.05b.0(1)-release (i386-pc-linux-gnu)
Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# ksh -o vi
# echo $KSH_VERSION
@(#)PD KSH v5.2.14 99/07/13.2
#
root@perita:/# sh --version
GNU bash, version 2.05b.0(1)-release (i386-pc-linux-gnu)
Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
root@perita:/# which sh
/bin/sh
root@perita:/#

I should also point out another bit of advice. I have found that casting
several spells at once in seperate sessions is not a good plan, especially if
you do not properly research dependencies to make sure the same spell does
not end up being cast in another session. cast seems robust enough to
recover most of the time, but this practice seems to lead to trouble. The
specificaton of multiple spells, preplanned as spells one wants to cast,
seems to be the best route in retrospect.

I thank you for your time in advance.

Subject: problem with configure script on scrollkeeper 0.3.12

This may be somewhat of a newbie question, but I have not found an answer
elsewhere and do not know where else to turn for advice. My problem is that
the check for docbook xml does not seem to work properly on my system. I am
sadly somewhat ignorant as far as dockbook, xml, and scrollkeeper, but I am
rapidly remedying this situation (the main purpose in installing scrollkeeper
atm is to make gnome-terminal work, though I am sure there are many useful
things to do with this.

Briefly, my problem is as follows. I am getting the following error during
the configure step:

===
checking for xslt-config... /usr/bin/xslt-config
checking for docbook-dtd412-xml... * ERROR *

Couldn't find the DocBook XML V4.1.2 DTD. Please make sure that you have the
docbook-dtd412-xml package installed. If it is installed, the package
probably did not register the DTD in the catalog properly. Consult
http://scrollkeeper.sourceforge.net/docbook.shtml for more information.

configure: error: DocBook XML V4.1.2 DTD not present in /etc/xml/catalog.
Make sure docbook-dtd412-xml is installed and registers DTD in catalog.
===

The pertenant portion of the configure script appears to be:

===
echo "$as_me:$LINENO: checking for docbook-dtd412-xml" >&5
echo $ECHO_N "checking for docbook-dtd412-xml... $ECHO_C" >&6
if ! xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML
V4.1.2//EN"
| grep "No entry" >/dev/null ; then
echo "* ERROR * "
echo " "
echo "Couldn't find the DocBook XML V4.1.2 DTD. Please make
sur
e that you have the docbook-dtd412-xml package installed. If it is installed,
th
e package probably did not register the DTD in the catalog properly. Consult
htt
p://scrollkeeper.sourceforge.net/docbook.shtml for more information."
===

but when I copy and paste the exact command into my xterm I get:

===
root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog
"-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.1.2//EN"
file:///usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.1.2/docbookx.dtd
root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12#
===

further, I get the following:
root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# file
/usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.1.2/docbookx.dtd
/usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.1.2/docbookx.dtd: exported SGML document
text
root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12#

So I don't know if I am doing something wrong or something is odd on my
system. I am running Sourcemage Gnu Linux 0.51 on an Athlon XP platform if
it is important. Since the actual choice of software and the compilation are
being driven by Sourcemage spells I am going to also check with that group to
see if they have input. Also if there is something relatively harmless I can
do to hack this process and make it go I will be grateful for suggestions. I
am loathe to try hacking around the configure script without being sure of
what I am doing ;).

Thank you very much for your patience and help. I know this is a developer
list but there don't seem to be other lists associated with this package and
it is a compile problem I am having...
