Dear SourceForge.net Developer,

As you may have noticed during the past two months, the SF.net team
has added new icons adjacent to user and project names on the site.
These images help convey which projects and users are accepting
donations You can view an example on this page:
http://sourceforge.net/top/mostactive.php?type=week

The green gear icons represent projects that are accepting financial
contributions. Users who donate money to these projects receive a gear
icon next to their name, signifying that they have given to the Open Source
project. An example is here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/popfile/
Note the gears next to the user's name. These users have contributed
to the project 'POPFile'. A full legend of icons and their associated
colors can be viewed here: http://tinyurl.com/34ba5

On a related note, SourceForge.net is now accepting both credit cards
and PayPal as payment options. The SF.net team has received a number of
emails from users who have requested alternatives to PayPal. Credit
cards can now be used for donations to SourceForge.net and for the
purchase of annual SF.net subscriptions. Note: It's not yet possible
to use a credit card (other then through PayPal) to donate directly to
a project or user.

Finally, we have extended our offer for a free t-shirt (from
thinkgeek.com) when you sign up for an annual SourceForge.net
subscription. SF.net subscribers receive a full array of exciting
features, including priority technical support. Sign-up today for a
subscription and help support SourceForge.net.

Open Source Growth
--------------------------------------------
Open Source software, a phrase coined only 6 years age, has gained
tremendous mind-share within the general public in just the past 18
months. Open any major newspaper or business magazine and you will
see articles about what Open Source is and how it is being used
Since SourceForge.net is a microcosm of the Open Source community,
it's growth likely mirrors the growth of the movement itself. (note:
I'm including the free software movement, which of course is older then
6 years...)

Alexa, a website now owned and operated by Amazon, keeps track of the
traffic generated by the top 100,000 websites in the world.
According to Alexa, SourceForge.net is now ranked #258 (out of 100,000)
in the world in terms of sheer traffic. To put this fact in some
perspective, during the past 12 months, SourceForge.net has surpassed
IBM.com, Sun.com, and Cnet.com in daily pageviews.

A graph from Alexa can be viewed here:
http://SourceForge.net/traffic.php . The blue line, representing
SourceForge.net, is the one to focus on. This graph is charting
relative traffic growth oppose to absolute numbers, meaning that while
all the sites are growing, SF.net is growing at a faster pace than it's
peers. This report reinforces what we already know, that the Open
Source movement is indeed growing at a tremendous pace and is making
inroads in all aspects of software development/deployment. It will be
intriguing to see how the graph changes in the months and years to
come.

March Project of the Month: Mailman
---------------------------------------------
Collaboration on the Internet has a single 'killer app', the mailing
list. SourceForge.net itself hosts over 35,000 mailing lists that allow
people to communicate via email all around the world. How does SF.net
manage all the lists, email subscriptions, passwords, setup, etc? We
use GNU Mailman, a powerful Open Source application sporting an
elegant web-based frontend that makes managing any number of lists
(from three to tens-of-thousands) a breeze. GNU Mailman has been with
SF.net since the very beginning. As of March 2004, SF.net now has over
75,000 projects; Mailman was registered when the site had just 102. The
SF.net team is proud to make GNU Mailman the March 2004 SourceForge.net
Project of the Month. We couldn't run the site without it.

Project of the month: http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2004-03.php

Homepage: http://mailman.sourceforge.net/

(BTW: April's Project of the month is BZFlag. More info in the next
newsletter.)

SF.net enhancements
---------------------------------------------
If you have interest in the latest info and new features on
SourceForge.net, there is no better place to look than the SF.net
enhancement page. It is updated regularly and contains useful
information about what the SF.net team is working on.

Be a SF.net download mirror
---------------------------------------------
SourceForge.net is looking to add approximately five additional mirrors
to our global download network. If you have a *lot* of bandwidth
(enough to provide the mirror a minimum of 40Mbps) and approximately a
terabyte of available disk space, we'd like to hear from you. Besides
helping SourceForge.net and the Open Source community, your
organization will be listed on SF.net's download page, which is
accessed approximately 1,500,000 times per day. If you have interest,
please email pat AT sf.net. Set the email subject to 'bandwidth'. Please
include information about your company/organization and your bandwidth
in the email. Thank you.

When the SF.net team sends out a site-wide email, we sometimes see
replies that look like this: "Hey! I didn't ask to be on this list! You
spammer. I hate you! I hate your dog! (insert other colorful phrases
here). The truth is, when you registered on SourceForge.net there was a
check box that said "Receive Site-wide updates, low volume". You left it
checked when you submitted the registration form, hence you are
receiving this email. We send these updates every 4 to 6 weeks, so it
truly is low volume. However if you want off, this is not a problem.
