Sounds like zen-garden is a win-win for us. Installwatch is already
unmaintained, so any bugs found we have to fix. Nothing new with zen-garden,
but
it's at least newer and might have some maintainers still floating around
willing to help.

I'd prefer that, if we do decide to drop/replace installwatch that we try
zen-garden first and see if that will fit our needs better. If it does not, we
try fakeroot, and if that works we can use it.

As for upgradeability, we'd probably add zen-garden/fakeroot to basesystem,
remove installwatch from basesystem, and a new Sorcery API that uses
zen-garden/fakeroot if it's installed, or installwatch if not. So we'd still
have installwatch installed for those who had it before, zen-garden/fakeroot
would be installed as machines updated, and the new system would be used as
soon
as the people updated/installed from a new ISO (well, a new ISO that was built
with the new system). A few spells that use workarounds to installwatch may
need
to be checked (what I found with a simple grep for LD_PRELOAD):
chat-libs/openh323
database/mysql
net/bind
shell-term-fm/bash
utils/autogen
