I think this is a classic case of updating a library that your base programs
need, same thing happens with other spells, eg, gettext. Might I suggest that
people take a serious look at updating base spells, and perhaps implement what
Ive advocated for a long time:

whenever theres /any/ update to a base library (glibc, gettext, readline) its
built into an install_root, all the base spells are verified together via
chroot, /then/ the spells are migrated to the native system.

The src/readline dir was removed because theres a sorcery 'feature' to remove
the source directory on failure which is off by default. Perhaps we should
consider ditching that feature?

This is really a spell bug IMO, the spell should be a lot more careful about
updating since it can basically kill bash, the same thing just happened on my
box.
