Sorcery is the foundation of our systems, it's stable version can't have
these
problems.
In the last two months I have had 5 machines become unusable and have had to
dedicate around 16-20 hours to correct them. Two of the first three machines
I can understand as I had them running devel sorcery, that was my own fault
for forgetting to run sorcery update after I had changed them to use stable.
(Third one was my desktop, and I have since decided not to run devel sorcery
on it, as helping debug it's problems interferes with my work and
productivity
and puts my personal timetable off track)
The last two times are in the last two weeks and are running stable sorcery.
I
have been unable to get one specific machine updated and working after an
fresh install this week, due to the combination of bugs in sorcery.
These are headless keyboardless boxes that make up my
cluster-in-the-cupboard,
I normally access them through ssh but everytime sorcery messes with them
(initscripts, /etc/services problems, or sorcery not reporting the failures
to
me after the initial rebuild) I have to take them out and connect up a
monitor
and keyboard so I can use init=/bin/bash to start recovering the system.
This leaves very little time left for my own work, and with the problems in
sorcery, many of the spells I want to test don't install correctly anyway. I
am in a catch-22 situation, should I update to fix one problem, only to
encounter another ? No, I installed stable sorcery, so I could concentrate on
my own work. But stable sorcery is too buggy, I can't rely on it either.
Releasing often is pointless if each release has problems. Stable has to be a
working snapshot, of course it will lack the features of devel and will even
have bugs, but it can't have showstoppers like it has now, lack of active
developers or not.
