http://zero-install.sourceforge.net/
"The Zero Install system makes software installation not merely easy,
but unnecessary. Users run their applications directly from the Internet
from the software author's pages. Caching makes this as fast as running
a normal application after the first time, and allows off-line use."
Basicly it's got a lazy caching netfs (which would be interesting use
for the grimoires BTW) and the dir structure corresponds to URIs. So you
can run the command '/uri/0install/rox.sourceforge.net/rox' from the
command line and it will download rox into the cache and run it (and
it'll get it's dependancies too if the author tells how to get them).
