Are you sure you can't d/l it? I had no problems. Please check for me it is
trying to d/l from the right site...
As for your question on detection, it is a simple test for JAVA_HOME, as both
j2sdk and j2sdk-bin create that var in /etc/profile, and if you source that
one into your .bash_profile or .bashrc it should work.
Finaly, I didn't see your message, but I had that error once when I had one of
my filesystems full (I don't recall now if it was / or /var).
