There are some spells in the gnome section that work with either gnome1
or gnome2 such as glademm2. There are also spells required by both
gnome1 and gnome2 like esound. I would love to phase out gnome1 but too
many spells depend on it still and don't have gnome2 versions.

Hi all,

I'd like to suggest that we split gnome into gnome1 and gnome2 (or gnome
and gnome2, or gnome and gnome1) so that there is a better split between
GNOME 1.x and GNOME 2.x.

Thoughts?

I was kind of thinking of suggesting a split, gnome, and gnome-libs. In gnome put all the end-user applications, ghex2, abiword2 (shouldn't that be with editors?, same with gedit2), evolution, gdm, etc. And in gnome-libs, but all the library files that these programs depend on.

As I think about it, a combination may be okay too. gnome, gnome1 and gnome-libs. I think it'd be safe to start removing gnome1 applications while retaining the libraries. Once an application has a gnome2 version, I don't see any need to keep the gnome1 app around. The libraries, yes we would need to keep until all the gnome1 apps are updated. For example, do we still need nautilus around now that there is a nautilus2, same w/ ghex and abiword, and evolution, and many others.
