Geoff,

Then, JAVA shouldn't exist at all (the BUILD script
isn't using it, I think), JAVA_HOME should point to
/opt/java/j2sdk, *and* he shouldn't have any entries
on his PATH pointing to /usr/local/bin/java or even
/usr/local/bin before /opt/java/j2sdk/bin (or
something like that). It really looks like the
configure for OO is finding a erroneous jre/j2sdk
(javac) in /usr/local/bin/java and that is ruining
everything.

It occured to me, j2sdk provides a java capable of compiling programs.
Why do you have the second java? I'm beginning to think you should
remove the java found in /usr/local/bin/java, remove the java
declarations from .bashrc, make sure j2sdk cast successfully (possibly
recast), then try to cast db.
