This http://www.mysql.de/doc/en/Upgrading-from-3.23.html essentially says it's easy to migrate from 3.23 to 4.0 and in the "hands-off migration" case one doesn't have to do anything. It also says that the /application/ side of things underwent considerable changes. So the short answer is, upgrade is likely to break things. Not very likely, but likely enough. The choices are mysql4, or a CONFIGURE option in mysql. The first option will make us use 'provides mysql' and change dependencies almost everywhere to 'require' instead of 'depends' (and there's no optional_require, mind you). Second option makes a spell more elaborate, but preserves DEPENDS everywhere else.
Comments?

We might run into quite some incompatiblities if we update mysql. Does
anyone know what spells won't work with mysql-4.x? If there are any
important spells creating a mysql4 spell would probably be better.
