I'm compiling php at least once a week :-). This bzip2 thing started with php after glibc upgrade, and I was trying to recompile bzip2 and to "shake the system" to make php compile, but then gave up and commented out "optional_depends bzip". My system also had libiconv which nobody else had at this time, and maybe latest gettext, so I knew I'm gonna have trouble sooner or later. I believe this group of spells, gettext, libiconv, glibc, have certain connection, so that it's better to have them somehow aligned to each other, and upgrade carefully, and have glibc recast after new versions of either of the gettext or libiconv. I was also quite surprised to find that GTK+2 for instance had depended on libiconv too close, they seemed to like software of different application levels.
I'm sure there's a better explanation, this one's not technical at all :-), sorry.

Sergey.
