Hi,
I'm a little behind on my messages, so forgive me if this is old news...

I seem to recall a change in the kernel in the way Promise controllers
were handled.... Something along the lines of swapping the order in which
the motherboard IDE controller and the Promise controller were detected
due to some problems getting Linux to boot or something like that. In any
case, (again from memory) there's a new option in the kernel config for
swapping the order in which the controllers are detected that might be
turned on for you, in which case your /dev/hde drive would now be
/dev/hdc.

So the short and the long of it is that I would try passing
root=/dev/hdc3 :)

Good luck!
