hi joel,
i really don't know anything about TeX and TeX configuration. But i use it
everyday, and since a major update is comming i thought i'd let you know
about a problem i encountered.

I casted TeX on two computers, it worked fine on one, and had serious
problems
on the other. This was not due to compile errors, but to something else. The
broken one was installed a few weeks earlier, so i thought an update could
have happened (on the source site). I recasted it, and got the same error.
That made me think it was some difference between mirrors, although it doesnt
make much sense.

Enough mistery! the trouble was that i was unable to compile latex files
(and
maybe many others). It warned me about not finding the latex.fmt file. Also,
metafont was breaking... xdvi ... pdflatex... ...Now, this might be simple...
the needed files were there but werent seen. For someone not knowing about
TeX configuration, it was hell. I finally was able to fix it adding a few
entries to the file ls-R in the texmf directory, and editing the texmf.conf
file in the web2c directory to fix the TEXMFMAIN path. It tries to guess the
path from some variables -maybe set at compile time- the SELFAUTOwhatever
ones, but that was broken.
The wierd thing was that on another computer that didnt happen. But it
happened to someone else while i was on irc, so it wasnt 'just me'.

This might even be already fixed. I think i didnt even submit to bugzilla
because having worked ok on one computer made me think the fault was TeX's.
On that computer the ls-R file was not missing (those) lines, and i didnt
rememeber checking the TEXMFMAIN variable.

Sorry for this lenghty post!
