A note about the upstream status: The issue that makes us reduce the march is
known to occur from time to time and it won't be helped.
A different gcc version may suddenly work again with pentium4, as may a new
qemu version.
It's the fierce struggle for registers between qemu hardcoding and gcc
optimizing ... on a battlefield with hardly any registers to fight for.

The long term resolution on the qemu mailing list was given as "x86 will
die", meaning, that you can't really help it and there will be more and more
x86-64 cpus replacing the x86 hardware, solving the problem by supplying more
registers...

Of course that doesn't help me on the short term with no x86-64 box for my
self:-(
