Summary: unknown bug
Product: Prometheus
OS/Version: All
Status: RESOLVED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P1
Component: Unknown
AssignedTo: sm-grimoire-bugs AT lists.ibiblio.org
ReportedBy: adam AT isurf.ca

This doesn't hold with the standards of other spells

`cast -c linux` shouldn't stop to request user input, `cast -r linux` should
stop and users should be able to reconfigure the kernel.

The reason for this kind of standard behaviour is that you should be able to
put
`sorcery system-update` in a cron job and (if everything is successful) not
have
it stop waiting for a user input that isn't there.

This bug is invalid.

I know the old linux spell wasn't a 'standard' spell and, in a lot of
respects,
neither is the current one. However I would like to keep with as many
standards
as possible.

I understand where you are coming from however I think it's more your behavior
and the old spell that are to blame.

I look at it from a different point of view. I look at it from a user goals
standpoint.

I'll try to break this down as I see it correct me if I'm wrong.

== Your Solution ==
Goals:
You have the spell installed and you want to change/add/remove something from
the kernel.

Steps:
You cast -c linux, the spell goes past the PREPARE menu and shows up at
menuconfig waiting for you to perform your change.

Goals:
You have the spell installed and you want to upgrade the spell to a new
version.

Steps:
You cast -r linux, exit the menusystem and select smgl-update-defaults and the
spell would then perform the upgrade

== Current Solution ==
Goals:
You have the spell installed and you want to change/add/remove something from
the kernel.

Steps:
You cast -r linux and exit the menu system and the spell continues waiting at
menuconfig for user input

Goals:
You have the spell installed and you want to upgrade the spell to a new
version.

Steps:
You cast -c linux, the spell goes past the PREPARE menus and performs the
upgrade.

== Problems ==
Your solution reverses the standard way a normal spell upgrades that's why I
think this bug is invalid.

This depends on what '-c' really means. Here I see two options:
1) -c means cast the spell with whatever the user chose last
or
2) -c means cast the spell with what the user chose last as long as it's
non-interactive

Currently the linux spell opts for #2, but it sounds like Karsten is wanting
#1.
For `sorcery system-update`-type runs #2 is preferred, for 'normal' usage #1
is
preferred and the 'standard'. However, all of our spells (AFAIK) have been
updated to be non-interactive on a -c cast (if they bring up a dialog they
use a
query, defaulting to 'n', asking if the dialog should be brought up (e.g. if
you
want to configure glibc)). So in that sense -c should /never/ bring up a
dialog
unless explicitly said to on the current cast (so the dialog question is a
query, not config_query, so it is asked every time).

So, IMO, #2 is what spells should opt for if have 'interactivity' such as
dialog
that'd stop a cast (such as the linux spell), otherwise #1.
