rofl, allow me to mark that post as flagrant abuse of utf8 :D
(possibly a bugzilla issue, i had to force kazehakase's encoding to utf8)

Anyway no, the purpose there is not immediately obvious. My best
justification
would be it exists for future compatibility - if /sbin/telinit ever gets any
options separate from /etc/rc telinit's options, there's already a defined
interface for splitting them. At a guess, these options would involve the
INIT_ROOT/PRE_PATH variables.

Hm, though actually if you check the comments at the top you'll notice:
# - removed -u option and checks for root UID as all smgl scripts.
which is probably the real reason the -- option exists...
