Filing this against the grimoire, but it impacts several areas... feel free to
move it around as makes sense.

Devel sorcery has added a '-g' flag as a way to cast from a specific
grimoire.
One reason for doing this is to help address the request we get for supporting
older versions of packages. If someone had a system on stable-0.2, but also
had
a tarball from stable-0.1, they could cast whatever version of apache2 we
supported in stable-0.1.

To complete this from the grimoire side, we should provide grimoire tarballs
for
every stable release. To keep the support manageable, however, we should only
actually support the current stable release. When we cut a new stable we'd
just
take the previous one and create a tarball, sign it, and put it out there for
archival purposes. We wouldn't put bug or security updates in there, people
can
track current stable easily enough to get that stuff, we don't have the
problem
of binary library dependencies that screws other distros over there.

(On a related note, as cast -g gets out there we should adopt a policy that we
support the -g feature functioning as advertised, but we don't support the
resulting combination of spells working together. If an admin tries -g and a
spell won't cast on eg their current gcc or does cast but doesn't act as
expected, they're on their own.)

I think that this gets us the real checkbox feature people are after in bug
8333, while keeping things inside of what we can reasonably support. We
provide
older versions coinciding only to what we did have in stable at one time, and
we
don't have to support large multi-version spell trees in each grimoire. I
think
bug 8333 is still valid for some future date, but we should see how this
solution pans out before we decide for sure.
