That documentation is *very* outdated.
Newer kernels do things a little bit differently, basically they ignore the
"root=" option when booting from an initramfs (you should not be using a true
initrd), but it still serves a purpose, albeit a different one, as it's
normally used by the initramfs' scripts to select the filesystem to pivot to.
The simplest way to use it is to specify your rootfs' UUID.
