Hi folks,

let's continue the discussion with my attempt to get gcc updated on
this box, shall we? I got gcc-4.9.2 and wanted to upgrade to the 5.3 in
the grimoire. The whole thing bailed out rather early, hosing the
system with messup around gmp:

So, that's not too good. Sorcery removes my gmp and then, oh wonder,
make refuses to run and we cannot install gmp. Am I the first one
hitting this basic issue? I'm not sure why GNU make should need to link
to gmp, but it does.

The remainder of the doomed cast is not that surprising, although
nicely filling up the terminal with FAIL:

Now, we ignore the test failure, OK, I guess we cannot do much about
that one … tests fail and it is a matter of your courage. At least I'm
not the first one encountering this:

https://gmplib.org/list-archives/gmp-bugs/2014-April/003451.html
https://gmplib.org/repo/gmp/rev/966737bd91ed

Well, we could consider adding that patch or upgrading gmp. Damn, I
wanted to login into another system where I manually installed
gcc-5.3.0, to check which gmp I got there, but sense that I'm in a bit
of trouble here:

ssh: error while loading shared libraries: libgmp.so.3: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

Of course I don't have a cache of gmp available. As to why make needs it …

There you go. I caught myself a case of guile infection. Somehow I
think a /bin/make.static would be interesting. What will happen if I
recast guile?! Folks, this is seriously broken:-(

I'll have to think about how I get a working make back … to get
anything working. Meanwhile, suggestions on how to un-break SMGL?
Perhaps libgmp should be treated like libc. But that guile dependency
of make will bite later on, too.

Alrighty then,

Thomas

PS: I'm not sure when I'll be able to read mail again … it kindof
depends on instances of programs that won't start again now.
