With SMGL it's all about choice. There were some projects to make the
system more init system independent, such that any spell would work with
any init system. That would probably be the proper choice for SMGL.

With regards to the systemd integration... *sigh*

We'll try to use the shims to continue to make smgl *not* dependent upon
systemd to function. I don't know what that's going to look like in the
future, but we don't want to tie ourselves tightly to systemd.

I don't mind if someone were to set up things so that users could use
systemd if they want, but it *must* not hard-depend on systemd, thus
breaking users who use other init systems.
