% locale charmap
UTF-8

% echo $LANG
en_US.utf8

So everything looks OK here...

Re-casted local, with "-r" to make sure of the right locales being
there, and I can't notice any change.

This is way weird, :-(

Are you using xorg-modular, or test Xorg stuff? Could it be that test
Xorg is buggy supporting utf-8?
