I am maintaintaing a devel branch where upstream releases devel snapshots
almost every week.. Official release occur every six months or so.

Under our current policy, the history will contain 6 months of noise for the
various snapshots, with occasional changes regarding dependencies or build
options.

I suggest that for this situation, the git branch should only record the
important changes, and only add the version update when the offical release
occurs and things are merged to the master branch.
Many projects have a rolling, incremental changelog which is used in this way.
The full change history is available from git anyway.

Any comments on this?
