So I managed to get vmware5 to install and work for me with the latest
kernel. My methodology is ugly, but I thought it might help some people.
First I did a cast vmware5 and answered all the questions until I got
the error about gcc headers. I then hit ctrl-c once to cancel out of the
script but not kill the cast. With the devel version of sorcery, the
cast moves into POST_INSTALL, this is handy for cleaning up the
unsuccessful cast, you can simply do a quick dispel vmware5. Here I
backed up my VMware-workstation-5.0.0-13124.tar.gz and unpacked it in
the /tmp dir. Then I downloaded vmware-any-any-update101.tar.gz and
unpacked it in the /tmp dir too. from within the update dir I ran
runme.pl This updated /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl and
/usr/lib/vmware/modules/source. I then cp the new vmware-config.pl to
the unpacked vmware-distrib/bin/vmware-config.pl and the three tarballs
in /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source to vmware-distrib/lib/modules/source/.
Then I created my updated tarball tar zcvf
/var/spool/sorcery/VMware-workstation-5.0.0-13124.tar.gz
vmware-distrib/. While that was going, I edited the vmware.patch file
in the spell dir and removed the second to last patch for
vmware-config.pl. At this point I simply did a dispel vmware5 to clean
everything out, otherwise you have to answer yes to overwrite every file
when you do your cast. After cleaning up, I ran cast vmware5 and ignored
the mismatched md5sum and everything worked perfectly. I know this is
ugly and doesn't fix the spell, but it works. I hope this helps someone
else.
