To clarify,
Andrew brought it to my attention that this thread has gone a bit further than managable. My idea doesn't extend beyond the innards of single CONFIGURE and DEPENDS files as they are being processed. Ultimately it's important mostly for CONFIGURE, so if it goes anywhere it should be tried there first, DEPENDS processing is a lot more complicated than most people realize. Any attempt to make this go beyong using dialog within a single CONFIGURE file should be moderated with an understanding of the system it's being proposed for. For example, it's not realistic to atomize an interface across multiple CONFIGURE files or multiple DEPENDS files or even within the same spell touching both CONFIGURE and DEPENDS at this point. There's too much to base in later stages on the results earlier stages to make it unrealistically broad (computing power being a major limit, given the resources of bash).
