Same thing has happened to quite a few people since when our domain was
parked that was the only way to get updates, then a lot of people didnt
remember to remove the entry since it made no difference whether they
did or not, and its the sort of thing you forget (it works so theres
nothing in your face saying something is broken). We recently changed
mirrors without a huge amount of publicity over it, and suddenly it
did matter what was in /etc/hosts.
Its actually kind of non-obvious if you forgot that you modified
/etc/hosts, which is pretty easy to do.
