I had a similar problem running 2.6.7-2.6.9 -- it didn't seem to
correspond to anything I did, it happenened sporadically. Then I saw a
kernel panic when I was booting and assumed that that was the problem.

However, since I upgraded to 2.6.10 (almost a month ago) I haven't
seen any hangs or crashes. You may want to upgrade to 2.6.10 and see
if that helps.
