I reinstalled and compiled gcc first. This worked, but then my xfsprog problem has reappeared. So I guess one can assume the problem is that xfsprogs 2.3.9 doesn't compile under gcc 3.2.3.
Hopefully, the problem will pan out over time.
I'll try your methods below if I do another reinstall, I'm getting quite fast at reinstalls now.
Cheers, Duane.

Can someone suggest what went wrong? Did I not configure gettextproblem seems to be that gettext overwrites a single file from glibc and that glibc2.3.2 needs gcc >= 3.2 but doesn't understand that gcc3.2.1 qualifies so 2 solutions are possible
properly or something??
1) take the file i am attaching and put it as /usr/include/libintl.h (no its not a trojan it is the file from glibc that gets overwritten when gettext installs) then "cast -c gcc glibc" 2) on bugzilla ( http://bugs.sourcemage.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3536 ) someone reported that export CC="gcc"
worked and fixed the glibc not compiling problem. This advice is on a need to know basis, I haven't NEEDED to fix this problem so i don't KNOW which one actually works. :-)
This seems to be an issue with test grimoire only.
